Umida Akhmedova, a prominent photojournalist in Uzbekistan, is facing criminal charges of insulting the Uzbek people. The charges stem in part from a 2007 album of photography depicting life in Uzbekistan’s villages. Here is a slide show featuring images from the album. 

Umida Akhmedova, the Uzbek [EN] documentary photographer, has been accused of insult and slander against Uzbek people and traditions, reports Fergana.ru [EN]. The maximum penalty for these charges includes remedial work on two up to three years or detention for up to six months.

Greeks vote today, sunday, to most likely produce a change in the government.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, 53, and opposition leader George Papandreou, 57, are both scions of political families are the two leading candidates in the elections today, 04 October 2009.

Papandreou has hammered Karamanlis’ economic record, accusing him of squandering an opportunity for growth after the 2004 Athens Olympics, cutting back on public investment and letting public debt grow unchecked. He has proposed a stimulus package to jump-start the economy, instead of Karamanlis’ freeze of spending and wages.

IMF ’s director Kahn attacked by shoes

A journalist, at the conference given at Bilgi University, Istanbul, attacked Kahn by throwing shoes and yelling “IMF go away from TURKEY”.

After the protest, IMF managing director said that It was important for us to be talking in a so open way. I was glad to see Turkish students and one more thing I learnt from my journey that, Turkish students were so kind, they waited the end of the speech to state their complaints.
