Noah’s Ark

Noah’ (or Noe, Noyach; Hebrew: נֹחַ, נוֹחַ, Modern Noaẖ Tiberian Nōăḥ; Arabic: نوح Nūḥ; Greek: Νωέ) was, according to the Bible, the tenth and last of the antediluvian Patriarchs; and a prophet according to the Qur’an. The biblical story of Noah is contained in the book of Genesis, chapters 6–9; he is also found in the passage ‘Noah’s sons”, while the Qur’an has an entire sura named after and devoted to his story, with other references elsewhere. In the Genesis account, Noah saves his family and representatives of all animals in groups of two or seven from the flood. In the Islamic account, a group of 72 others are also saved) He receives a covenant from God, and his sons repopulate the earth.

The Book of Genesis, chapters 6-9, tells how God sends a great flood to destroy the earth because of man’s wickedness and because the earth is corrupt. God tells Noah, the righteous man in his generation, to build a large vessel to save his family and a representation of the world’s animals. God gives detailed instructions for the Ark and, after its completion, sends the animals to Noah. God then sends the Flood, which rises until all the mountains are covered, and most living things died, except the fish. Then “God remembered Noah,” the waters abate, and dry land reappears. Noah, his family, and the animals leave the Ark, and God vowed to never again send a flood to destroy the Earth.

A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical Christians said they had uncovered remnants of Noah’s Ark on its legendary mountain resting place in Turkey.

Noah’s Ark Ministries International, a Hong Kong-based documentary outfit, said they recovered wooden specimens from a structure on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey that carbon dating proved the material was 4800 years old, around the same time the ark is said to have been afloat.

After the flood waters receded, the Bible says, the ark came to rest on a mountain.

It has long been believed that Mount Ararat, the highest point in the region, is where the Ark and it inhabitants came aground.
