Haiti (pronounced /ˈheɪtɪ/; French Haïti, pronounced: [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti, Haitian Creole pronunciation: [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (République d’Haïti ; Repiblik Ayiti) is a Caribbean country. Along with the Dominican Republic, it occupies the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antillean archipelago. Ayiti (land of high mountains) was the indigenous Taíno or Amerindian name for the mountainous western side of the island. The country’s highest point is Pic la Selle, at 2,680 metres (8,793 ft). A massive earthquake struck Haiti just before 5 p.m. on Jan. 12, about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the country’s capital. The quake was the worst in the region in more than 200 years. A preliminary assessment from Haiti’s government put the body count at 150,000 on Jan. 23.[NYTIMES]

In the aftermath of January 12th’s catastrophic earthquake, Haiti is in dire need of your help. HUFH founder Jimmy Jean-Louis has flown down to Haiti to personally deliver supplies and aid in the search and rescue. Basic necessities are required: water, blankets, medication, temporary shelter and much more.
